Coconics to supply made in India laptops to Kerala Govt.

Coconics - Made in India Laptops

Home-grown joint venture hardware manufacturer from Kerala, Coconics has clinched an order, through competitive bidding, to supply 50% of the mid-level laptops to the Kerala government for the next six months. The deal is expected to save the State government up to Rs.16,000 on a single machine!

“The demand for electronic equipment and systems is growing tremendously across the country and Coconics is equipped to participate in any competitive bidding at the national level,” said M. Sivasankar, Secretary, Electronics and IT.

Coconics – a new public-private company setup in Kerala by UST Global, KELTRON, KSIDC and Acceleron Labs, secured the order in the face of stiff competition from multinational giants. The agreement, which is part of the government’s cost-saving demand aggregation policy, marks a public-private partnership that will boost the electronic hardware ecosystem in the State. The government had decided on a policy of demand aggregation to purchase its requirements through the Centralised Procurement and Rate Contract System (CPRCS), marking a departure from the practice of departments making separate purchases. The State Department of Electronics and Information Technology had floated the e-tenders through Keltron. In the bidding, Coconics quoted the lowest price.

The laptops are being made at Coconics’ state of the art manufacturing plant in Monvila on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram at Keltron’s printed circuit board making centre at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

  • Coconics will offer three laptop models initially to the public and is available on Amazon.

Coconics, which has the support of global chip maker giant Intel, has a manufacturing unit at Manvila in Thiruvananthapuram. The purchase agreement with Coconics will enable the government to offset the impact of frequent price hike in the open market against its growing demand for hardware systems. As per the agreement, a laptop using open source software is priced at Rs.22,896 against the open market price of Rs.38,902. Similarly, the price of the system using licensed software is priced at Rs.33,762, while the open market price is as high as Rs.49,149. For the public, the products is available to buy online at Amazon.

Native vs hybrid app development

Mobile apps: Native apps vs hybrid apps

Native or hybrid… What’s the difference?
Understanding your mobile application development options

Native apps

Google Android operating systemNative apps are platform-specific software specifically built for devices like Android or iPhone.

Native apps can be downloaded and installed from an app store (such as Google Play or Apple’s app store).

Native apps are developed specifically for one platform, and can take full advantage of all that particular device features like its camera, GPS, accelerometer, compass, the list of contacts, and so on.

Google Play logoNative app development can be used for resource- or speed-intensive applications such as gaming. Separate native apps must be developed for individual device types. For example, an app built for the iPhone works only works on the iPhone; respectively, apps built for Android only work on Android smartphones & other Android devices.

Native apps can use the device’s notification system, for example, and can even work offline. Check out AndroidErrors.com.

Hybrid apps

Hybrid apps are just mobile-optimized webpages that look like an app. They are run by a mobile browser and they render HTML web pages and are typically written in HTML5.

Google Android operating systemIn a Hybrid app, one set of code can work on various devices without having to do much device specific coding, even though it will compromise on performance and features, you don’t need to maintain different software for various devices for the same application.

Users initially access them as they would access any web page. Then they navigate to a special URL and have the option of “installing”. There is nothing to install actually, as they are only bookmarking that page on their home screen.

So, according to your requirement, you can choose the development route that you intend to take whether you need to build a Native App or a Hybrid App. Check out PhoneGap for Hybrid App development tools using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

HTML5 web apps are becoming increasingly popular; with HTML5, one can obtain functionality similar to that of a native app within the browser. Nowadays, as more and more sites use HTML5, the distinction between web apps and standard web pages are becoming narrower.
